Held in Perrysburg Ohio, the 2001 Ohio Powered Paraglider Fly-In was very well organized and took place at one of the many PPG training fields that Ohio Powered Paragliding has available.
The field was big enough and carefully mowed to allow an easy take-off in any direction.
Bruce Brown owner of Ohio Powered Paragliding, an ASC certified instructor, hosted the event which had no commercial purpose. It was just a big gathering of fellow pilots and friends from many states, who just wanted to have fun.
Before the flying event, Mrs. Betty Pfeiffer, President of High Energy Sports (www.highenergysports.com) held a very interesting and well documented reserve clinic at the local WMCA. The meeting was so successful that it had to be continued in Bruce Brwon's house for hours, after the WMCA had closed. Mrs. Pfeiffer presented the theory and principles that stand behind a PPG rescue system. Several brands of emergency parachutes were presented along with different repacking techniques. Another interesting topic was the specific PPG use of an emergency parachute. Carrying a paramotor on his back, the pilot encounters different conditions than in free flight and deploying a rescue system involves other techniques.
I was a little disappointed to see that only a small part of the later participants could attend the reserve clinic. The next day, Friday, more pilots arrived and the fun started early in the morning. Because of the favorable conditions, we flew all day long.
During the convention, the pilots could exchange many useful thoughts about repairs, maintenance and PPG flying in general.
Some pilots even volunteered helping others to repair their machines.
There were a total of 39 pilots from 10 states who attended. Pilot skills are developing nicely. Not many aborted launches, and everyone who wanted to fly got up and out. ...not many broken props, but even veterans sometimes, have mishaps or "bad days".......
Equipment Breakdown
There were 12 DK paramotors, 7 Airfer Tornados/Bimax, 5 Sky Cruisers, 5 Adventure machines, 3 Fresh Breeze, 3 Xplorers, 2 La Mouette, one Koenig engine powered paramotor and one JPX machine.

Bruce Brown of Ohio Powered Paragliding, our host, in an interview given to the local TV station (which for more than two hours had a live transmission of the event) stated: "All of the pilots brought a great deal of class and integrity to our fantastic sport of Powered Paragliding. This event was the result of a common effort of the participants. I am grateful to all those who worked hard and helped us make this event a reality."
The convention officially, ended on Sunday afternoon but a few pilots stayed for another day. They just could not have enough!
